For reasons beyond common knowledge, the flora and fauna of earth suddenly began rapidly mutating, making them far more aggressive and dangerous. Roots tore up roads, vines covered and damaged buildings to the point of collapse and deadly spore clouds and toxins choked the masses. Predators grew in size, strength and ferocity as they shrugged off bullets and blades while hunting humans and feasting. Nearly all civilisation fell back to nature.
Nobody alive remembers the old world, nor does anybody know exactly how long it has been since the old world fell. Pieces of the past still exist in the ruins of old cities and towns though much of it is buried. Even that which is unearthed is often misunderstood. Celebrities and brands from the old world can be seen as historical leaders or religions in the new world.
Some human settlements do remain however. The three cities of Smogtown, Northport and New Babylon are some of the few large enough to support proper industry. A number of smaller settlements and outposts also exist.
They are connected by a roughly two thousand-mile stretch of roads known as The Long Road. The Long Road is the only remaining network of asphalt roads, outside the cities, that are still drivable. The rest have been claimed by the plant life. It is an extremely valuable yet dangerous connection between human settlements.
Drivers are mercenaries who travel along The Long Road as couriers and escorts. The job usually pays well but is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Drivers must fight off monsters and bandits while protecting their cargo and conserving their fuel and supplies. Getting stuck on the road without sufficient protection is practically a death sentence.
The Three Cities are the largest remaining settlements. They can provide some of the ammenities available in the old world, such as industry, entertainment, plumbing and even electricity while the smaller settlements struggle with far fewer resources and infrastructure.
Smogtown was an industrial city even in the old world, though its old name has been lost to time.
Near the center of the city is a statue bearing the likeness and name of a prominent figure of the old world, Charles Earl Grey. The current leader of the city, claims the statue is of a messiah like figure, and that he himself is a reincarnation of said person, having also taken the name as his own. His primary advisors are known as Earl Black and Earl White. These two figures are often opposing forces presenting counter arguments until Earl Grey casts the deciding vote.
Smogtown Ale is one of the most recognised and loved beverages on the Long Road. Shipments of the ale require very strong protection.

Northport is a partly flooded city of canals. Since the old world fell, the city has become an industrial powerhouse with the waterway powering many mills and other machines.
The Northport Union for the Liberation of Laborers arose several decades ago to protest poor working conditions in the city. While some small reforms were made and other protests stamped out, a small group of more extreme members broke off, entering into self exile. Now known as NULL, the group frequently execute attacks on trade convoys in and out of the city. While some may still see them as fighters for common workers, many others, including former members, condone them as little more than bandits and terrorists.

Unlike the other cities, New Babylon was actually not built from the remains of an old world city. Instead, it was built entirely from scratch with new world technology and resources.
The Temple is the religious and political institution that rules the city.
The Grandfather/Grandmother/Grandparent is the ultimate leader, and is treated as a god-like figure.
The Father/Mother/Parent is the heir apparent to the above. They also tend to serve a more functional role, leading sermons and government, with the Grandfather/Grandmother being more symbolic but still having the final word.
An Uncle/Aunt/Pibling is a senior member of the clergy and government.
A Brother/Sister/Sibling is an adult member of the Temple.
A Son/Daughter/Child is a child or an uninitiated member of the Temple.
The majority of the city's military and law enforcement are staffed by the Lead Wolfpack who have contracts with the Temple.

As well as monsters, The Long Road is plagued by bandits, marauders and religious fanatics. These gangs control territory along the Long Road and are known to extort, rob or even kill drivers. Each of the gangs operates out of a stronghold or town where they stockpile resources and machines.
There are a number of smaller gangs in addition to the below, though most only operate in and around a single settlement. These gangs often offer tribute to the larger gangs below.
Few people remember what the wildlife of the old world was like but there are a few surviving photos and illustrations. It is clear that the monsters are descendants of these old world creatures but are far stronger, faster, smarter and more resilient. Some of the more known ones are described below.
Fangs, or prowlers, are similar to old world wolves, dogs, big cats and bears, they typically stand over 2m tall at the shoulders and possess thick, leathery skin under scraggly fur, that appears to resist bullets. Their grip is enough to hold a car still, and they can easily keep up with many cars. They tend to be the most common type of monster that attack drivers. Legends speak of alphas who stand over 4m tall with glowing eyes.
Stampeders look like large, muscular horses. Unlike horses, they bear sharp teeth, large mouths and horn like stubs. They tend to travel in packs and are capable of flipping cars.
Demolishers are great apes with dense purple fur. Even the smallest adults stand just over 2m tall while on two legs,. The largest have been known to reach 5m. Like many monsters, their thick skin can resist most small calibre bullets. They are extremely strong and surprisingly methodical about the destruction they sow. They have been known to stop moving cars, destroy brick walls, leap several stories and crush steel.
Scrappers are smaller apes who, while not as strong or resilient as demolishers, are incredibly clever and agile. They have been known to climb all over moving vehicles, even under them to attack specific portions of the cars. Many have even been seen using crude weapons like stones, sticks and metal shards to smash windows, slash tires, open doors, tamper with engine blocks and pierce fuel tanks.
Raptors are a loose term for flying birds and reptiles that attack drivers. While they do not possess thick skin, they are difficult to hit due to their size and speed. There is a legend of a large flying reptile with a 6-8m wingspan and a terrifying screech known as the Wyvern.
Large swarms of insects can also plague the Long Road. Wasps and locusts are especially brutal with venom strong enough to kill humans with single sting and hordes capable of consuming an entire settlement's supplies in mere minutes.
Bulkers are large rhino like creatures with a charge strong enough to flip even the largest big rigs. They are also seemingly immune to most forms of firepower. A bulker once broke into New Babylon and began tearing down buildings, it took over a thousand rounds, two dozen harpoons, five molotovs and three RPGs to finally kill it.
Honey Badgers are the same as they've always been.
Many claim the monsters in the forests get more aggressive and dangerous at night, leading to the belief that you should always try to reach the next town rather than attempting to camp, regardless of what it costs you.
It was not only animals that grew stronger, the plants began aggressive growth as well. Roots and stems began to burrow through concrete and stone, destroying roads and buildings. Spores and odours began choking people in large numbers, entire cities would be killed within days. Some stories have even claimed finding bodies in the forests strangled and hanged by vines.
