Like many legendary warriors, you specialize in the spear and shield. WIP
Starting at 3rd level, you gain special affinity with hoplite weapons, which are javelins, spears, tridents and pikes.
While you are wielding a shield in one hand and a hoplite weapon in the other, you can wield the weapon as if you were holding it with two hands, allowing you to use the versatile or two-handed property. In addition, all hoplite weapons have reach property while you wield them.
maybe disallow the pike?
Starting at 3rd level, while you are wielding a shield and are within 5ft of a friendly creature that is also wielding a shield, you both gain a +1 bonus to your Armor Class and to Strength and Dexterity saving throws. Any number of creatures can gain this benefit at one time, but each creature only benefits once.
This bonus increases to +2 when you reach xth level in this class.
Starting at 3rd level, when you take the Attack action on your turn, you can use a bonus action to make a special melee weapon attack with your shield. On a hit, the attack deals 1d6 + your Strength modifier bludgeoning damage. You must be wielding a shield and a hoplite weapon to use this feature.
This may be too many lv3 features, something has to move.
The phalanx one could probably move
Starting at 7th level, you choose one of the followiing forms to improve your weapon skills. Whenever you gain a level in this class, you can replace the form you know with a different one.
Thrower. When you make a ranged attack with a hoplite weapon that has the thrown property, the weapon returns to your hand after the attack. (Doesn't make sense without magic, maybe just improve range/damage)
TBD. You have advantage on opportunity attacks using hoplite weapons against creatures at least one size larger than you.
Starting at 10th level,
Starting at 15th level,
Starting at 18th level,
Starting at xth level, the bonus from your Phalanx Defence feature increases to +2. In addition, the creatures have advantage on saving throws to avoid or remove the frightened condition.
probably 10th (or maybe 15th if the base is moved to 7th)
Starting at xth level, when you hit a creature with an attack using your Shield Bash feature, you can force that creature you make a Strength saving throw or be pushed back 5ft or knocked (your choice). The DC for this saving throw is equal to 8 + your Strength modifier + your proficiency bonus.
Is this too similar to the Shield master feat, especially given the phalanx feature is also similar
Starting at xth level, once per turn, when you hit a creature with a melee attack using a hoplite weapon, you can attempt to hit another creature behind or beside them with the same motion. Make an attack roll with disadvantage, targeting a creature within 5ft of the original target. You must use the same weapon for both attacks.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus. You regain all expended uses each time you finish a long rest.
