Most of this was designed for Cogent v1.2, I will be slowly updating to v1.3 shortly.
Being Vulnerable to something means if you take an injury from an attack or effect composed mostly of that thing, the injury level is increased by one. This does not affect victory level and can still be reduced by strength or armour. For example, if a combat roll involving holy water gains a level 2 victory over someone vulnerable to it, the attacker can inflict a level 3 injury but it still counts as a level 2 victory.
Being Immune to something means if you cannot take an injury from an attack or effect composed entirely of that thing.
Being Weakend By an area means you gain a -1D6 penalty to all rolls made when in or on it (even when flying less than a mile above it).
Having multiple tags means you take on the traits of both tags. For example having both celestial and infernal tags would mean you are vulnerable to effects that target either.
Lesser Angels are the foot soldiers and messengers of the celestial kingdom. Occasionally, lesser angels can ascend to become Greater Angels or even Seraphim.
An angel who violates their virtues, or embraces sin, may "fall" to become a human, demon or exile.
Appearance. Lesser angels appear mostly humanoid but with some celestial traits such as white hair, solid golden eyes or even extra eyes. Their appearance often relates to their assigned virtue. An angel of temperance may appear malnourished and modestly dressed, while an angel of chastity may appear youthful.
Age. Lesser angels are immortal, some are thousands of years old. Despite this immortality, they can still be killed almost as easily as mortals.
Special Trait: Holy Virtue. You have a specific purpose in the mortal realm, this is described by your virtue. Choose (or roll) your virtue from the list below, you gain the virtue as a free vocation. This vocation allows you to take Virtuous Magic forms as combat skills under it. You also gain a free skillpoint which you can spend to improve the vocation or on a magic skill under the vocation. The Narrator may also award you destiny points for encouraging mortals to follow your virtue where they otherwise might not have.
Virtues
Celestial champions are mortals who have been granted special powers by celestials, often in exchange for an oath. Celestial champions tend to be notable rulers, preachers and soldiers. Many have been known as paladins, exorcists, witch hunters, healers and more. Most champions began their lives as humans, though on rare occasions, other animals have been chosen. Horses, birds and dogs are particular favourites of celestials.
Champions swear to an oath of virtue, if they violate their virtues, they may be stripped of their powers and become a human or an exile.
Famous celestial champions include; Pegasus, King David, St. Peter, St. George, Beowulf, Charlemagne, Joan of Arc, Napoleon and Queen Victoria.
Appearance. Champions tend to retain their mortal appearance, though some may inherit more celestial traits such as white or gold hairs or unusually bright eyes. Even the most mortal looking champions may change slightly when using magic, such as their eyes turning solid gold, hair rising unnaturally or wings appearing briefly in shadows.
Age. The lifespans of champions seem to vary greatly, but some have been known to live several centuries. They tend to lead dangerous lives and often die far before this age however.
Special Trait: Holy Oath. You have made an oath to a celestial being. You gain a free vocation related to your oath, such as vampire hunter or missionary. This vocation allows you to take Virtuous Magic forms as combat skills under it. You also gain a free skill point, which you can spend to improve the vocation or on a non-magic skill under the vocation.
Sometimes even mere mortals can shape the world without the gifts of celestials or infernals. Humans have no powers or special traits but some can more than compensate through determination, skill and dumb luck.
Humans can, through an oath or pact, become a champion of a celestial or infernal.
Appearance. Humans appear human, because they are.
Age. Human lifespan depends on many factors, but they rarely live more than eight decades even in the best conditions.
Special Trait: Mortal Versatility. You gain two free skill points to spend how you wish.
Infernal Champions are mortals who have been granted special powers by infernals, often in some form of pact or curse. Infernal champions tend to be notable warlords, artists and warriors. Many have been known as witches, warlocks, vampires, werewolves, revenants, and more. Most champions began their lives as humans, though on rare occasions, other animals have been chosen. Wolves, serpents and cats are particular favourites of infernals.
Champions swear to a pact of sin, if they violate their sins, they may be stripped of their powers and become a human or an exile.
Famous infernal champions include; Achilles, Goliath, Caligula, Grendal, Morgana, William Wallace, Vlad the Impaler, Da Vinci, Julie d'Aubigny and Paganini.
Appearance. Champions tend to retain their mortal appearance, though some may gain slightly more monstrous and fiendish features such as fangs, claw like nails or even small horns. Even the most mortal looking champions may change slightly when using magic, such as their eyes turning solid black, hair rising unnaturally or thin wisps of smoke emerging from their mouth.
Age. The lifespans of champions seem to vary greatly, but some have been known to live several centuries. They tend to lead dangerous lives and often die far before this age however.
Special Trait: Unholy Pact. You have made a pact with an infernal being. You gain a free vocation related to your pact, such as vampire lord or witch. This vocation allows you to take Sinful Magic forms as combat skills under it. You also gain a free skill point, which you can spend to improve the vocation or on a non-magic skill under the vocation.
Lesser Demons are the residents and soldiers of the infernal kingdom. Occasionally lesser angels can ascend to become Greater Demons or even Fiends.
A demon who violates their sins, or embraces virtues, may "ascend" to become a human, demon or exile.
Appearance. Lesser demons appear mostly humanoid but with some infernal traits such as small horns, forked tongues and solid black eyes. Their appearance often relates to their assigned sin. A demon of lust (also known as a succubus or incubus) may have hooves and a tail while a demon of pride may have elaborate hairstyles, horns and outfits.
Age. Lesser demons are immortal, some are thousands of years old. Despite this immortality, they can still be killed almost as easily as mortals.
Special Trait: Unholy Sin. You have a specific purpose in the mortal realm, to tempt mortals to a specific sin. Choose (or roll) your sin from the list below, you gain the sin as a free vocation. This vocation allows you to take Sinful Magic forms as combat skills under it. You also gain a free skill point, which you can spend to improve the vocation or on a magic skill under the vocation. The Narrator may also award you destiny points for tempting mortals to indulge in your sin where they otherwise might not have.
Sins
The following are very uncommon, I will be hesitant to allow multiple of them. You will need to justify your character, perhaps with a good backstory.
Whilst celestials fornicating with mortals is forbidden, it does still happen. Any resulting offspring are widely viewed with disgust among celestials. Some have argued that Jesus Christ was a Half-Breed, while others are offended by the idea that the Celestial Being would couple with a mere mortal. Suggesting instead that he was actually a celestial Champion or an Angel disguised as a human.
Appearance. Half-Breeds usually appear human but can inherit certain celestial traits such as white hair or golden eyes.
Age. Half-Breeds rarely survive till adulthood, but those that do can live several centuries.
Special Trait: Half-Breed. You can choose to gain either the special trait of a Lesser Angel or a Human but not both.
Hybrids are the result of a coupling of celestial and infernal, a great taboo for both sides. This often results in death or exile for both parents. Hybrids are almost universally hated as symbols of betrayal and as abominations.
Appearance. Hybrids usually appear human but can inherit certain celestial or infernal traits such as white hair or black eyes.
Age. The lifespan of Hybrids is unknown. None have ever been known to survive till adulthood.
Special Trait: Hybrid Magic. You gain a free vocation in a particular virtue and one in a particular sin. The virtue vocation allows you to take Virtuous Magic forms as combat skills under it and the sin vocation allows you to take Sinful Magic forms as combat skills under it
While not as taboo as among celestials, fornicating with mortals is still discouraged for infernals, except as a temptation. Many infernals consider raising a Half-Breed child beneath them, and so they are often abandoned.
Appearance. Half-Breeds usually appear human but can inherit certain infernal traits such as small horns or solid black eyes.
Age. Half-Breeds rarely survive till adulthood, but those that do can live several centuries.
Special Trait: Half-Breed. You can choose to gain either the special trait of a Lesser Angel or a Human but not both.
Fallen angels and redeemed demons can often find new homes with the infernal or celestial kingdom respectively. However, some beings have committed crimes so abhorrent that they are rejected by both, stripped of all powers and left to die in shame.
Many champions who violate their oaths or pacts are swiftly killed, but some are forced to become exiles instead.
Appearance. Exiles retain most of their former appearance. They nearly always appear malnourished and on the brink of death.
Age. Exiles rarely live more than a few days after exile.
Special Trait: Hard Life. You do not gain any starting skill points. You may still gain skill points from Intelligence or Disabling Characteristics.
Exiles are meant for players who want to play "hard mode". They can potentially earn the right to lose their exile status and get the benefits of another race if the story allows.
